Detailed Recipe for Making Traditional Modakam

Here is a detailed step-by-step procedure to follow for the modakam recipe to prepare at home:

Step 1: Make the Sweet Stuffing

Heat ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add the poppy seeds and stir well, frying until they crackle. Next, add the finely chopped jaggery and grated coconut. Mix all these ingredients and cook for about 7-9 minutes until the moisture reduces. Now, let the mixture cool down.

Step 2: Prepare the Rice Flour Dough

Take another pan and boil water, ghee and salt. Add the rice flour and stir continuously until it mixes. Cover the pan with a lid and wait for 4-5 minutes. While it is warm, knead the dough and add more water for a smooth consistency.

Step 3: Shape the Modak

Make small balls of dough and flatten it like a disc. Put the sweet stuffing prepared earlier in the centre of the dough. Keep folding, then pleat the edges to seal the modak completely. For an accurate modak shape, take a modak mould, if available.

Step 4: Steam the Modak

Take a stainless steel multi kadai and grease it. Place the shaped modaks and steam them. Continue for another 10-15 minutes, until thoroughly cooked.

Step 5: Offer it to Lord Ganesha

Before serving the modak to Lord Ganesha, cool it down slightly. Continue enjoying the Ukadiche modak in a festive mood during Ganesh Chaturthi!

Tips to Follow to Make a Perfect Ukadiche Modak at Home

  • Steam the modaks: Steam modaks for approximately 10-15 minutes. Do not over-steam, as it might impact the soft texture.
  • Cover the prepared dough: Cover the dough with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out while shaping the modaks.
